today i was bored so i did a thing. very spur of the moment so it’s kind of a shitty cover. and i had to keep the pads on my drums, but whatever. i made up for it by spending more time than i should have on the editing.

sweater weather - the neighbourhood (drum cover)

stumbled upon this on youtube and i am so glad that i did, because it is magnificent. all the percussion. it makes me happy. and the video editing is super legit as well. like daaaang.

Mike Trout is to baseball as Matt Garstka is to drumming … young, freakishly talented and better at his craft than pretty much everyone.

My wrist is legitimately swollen right now from playing the drums earlier today. I’m assuming it’s just because I don’t get to play as regularly as I used to, but it’s happened every time I’ve played since early summer and it’s starting to bum me out. I don’t want anything to get in the way of me doing one of the few things that makes me happy.

This settles it. Matt Garstka is on a completely different level than any drummer I’ve heard/seen in years. He’s unbelievably solid, has incredible dynamics and feel, and is amazingly versatile while playing a genre of music that so often ignores all of those things. I can’t get enough of his playing and can’t wait to hear what he does on the next Animals As Leaders record.

I know I’ve posted a few videos of his on this blog since Thrice toured with them last year, but the latest installment from Meinl Cymbals has completely liquified my brain. I had to post it.

If you’re a drummer, watch this and try to keep yourself from staring at it wide-eyed and grinning from ear-to-ear. Then, watch it again and try to keep yourself from picking your jaw up off the floor every five seconds. Then, watch it again and avoid the urge to set your kit on fire and take up another instrument.

What an absolute monster of a drummer.
